“How would you get food without money?”

A question was left ringing in my ears today. While discussing socialism a friend asked me “How would you get food without money”, and my jaw hit the floor. It’s a mark of the extent of capitalist brainwashing that one can grow up believing the world resolves around money. Indeed, I’d go so far as to call money the God of the twenty-first century.

Marx wrote that the search for profit has torn down all traditional boundaries, transforming relationships of love into nothing more than mere financial arrangements. In my opinion, money has done more than transform – it has destroyed and defiled much that was once called sacred. Money has become our God. It is a sad truth that people do not wake up and wonder how they will serve God, or their fellow humans, or anything noble. No, they instead wake up and wonder how they will make money – how they will serve the bourgeois – how they will survive!

What does humanity worship? We may go to a church/mosque/temple etc for an hour each week, but what does humanity truly worship? Think about it for a moment – what do people think about regularily? What brings people together or (much more often) tear them apart? What guides our actions, our thoughts, our life?

The answer, it appears to me, is money! Nothing has more influence on one’s life than cold-hard-cash. An incredibly depressing realization, but something that everyone must come to terms with. Once we accept this reality, we can work to change it!
